Overview

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which opened in 2021, is the world’s premier museum devoted to the art and science of film and filmmakers. The building features 300,000 square feet of state-of-the-art galleries and exhibition spaces, movie theaters, educational areas, special event spaces, a store, and a restaurant and cafe.

Throughout the museum, visitors can take part in immersive exhibitions that pull back the curtain on moviemaking and highlight the history and future of the arts and sciences of film for film lovers everywhere across generations.

In 2018, the Simms/Mann Family Foundation made a gift to endow a 288-seat theater in honor of movie theater entrepreneur Ted Mann, which serves as a home for retrospectives, screening series, and special programming.

Desired Impact

In addition to endowing the Ted Mann Theater, the Foundation also funded a permanent exhibition in the theater’s lobby about the life and legacy of Ted Mann himself and a short film about him on the museum website. The exhibition and film highlight Ted’s pivotal role as an entrepreneur in the motion picture industry and a dedicated community philanthropist who exemplified integrity. The Foundation hopes to share with the public Ted’s passion for movies and his principled approach to business and life, inspiring a new generation of film lovers and moviemakers.

Filmmaking is the ultimate collaborative art form…we want film lovers to see themselves reflected back to them in the museum and we want people to be inspired about careers in moviemaking .”
