- Supporting faculty teaching the next generation of early child educators.
Overview
In California, the community college and state university systems educate the majority of California’s early childhood professionals. With data indicating that 2 out of 3 American children under age 5 receive some form of nonparental child care—most often within the first year of life—the need for a highly trained early care and education workforce is clear.
The Simms/Mann Institute Faculty Fellowship was designed specifically for California community college and state university faculty in the fields of child development, early childhood education, psychology, and related areas of nursing. The Fellowship recognized faculty whose professional experience, leadership ability, and interest in exploring and integrating research related to early childhood development had the potential to make significant contributions to the field and the broader community.
Desired Impact
The goals of the Fellowship were to highlight the importance of the earliest years in a child’s life on their lifelong health. The Fellowship focused on resilience and positive relationships, raising awareness of the critical role community colleges play in the early childhood field, and elevating the quality of academic scholarship in the community college realm. The Fellows engaged in year-long research projects that were featured at the annual Think Tank.
As a result of this Fellowship, community college and state university faculty were able to immediately incorporate leading-edge research into their classrooms, invigorate their teaching, and stimulate student interest in learning. As such, their students were equipped with the knowledge and experience to become leaders in the early child education workforce.
