Overview

Founded in 1931 in the midst of the Great Depression, JVS SoCal started with just a single desk in a Bunker Hill office in downtown Los Angeles helping job seekers who struggled to survive overt workplace discrimination.

Nine decades later, the agency is a recognized regional leader in the field of workforce development. JVS offers a range of innovative programs to tens of thousands of individuals each year and advocates for issues of public policy. In partnership with private donors, the JVS Scholarship Program provides qualified Jewish students whose primary residence is in the Greater Los Angeles area with need-based financial aid, in the belief that education represents the first step to career success.

In 2012, the Foundation established the Simms/Mann Family Scholarship, which now presents scholarships every year to 6 students attending medical school or pursuing another graduate degree. The scholarship goes towards tuition and school expenses for students in the healthcare field who show an outstanding commitment to their studies and to future patient populations.

Desired Impact

The Foundation believes in JVS’s vision to empower individuals to achieve dignity and economic independence through sustainable employment. As such, the Foundation endowed a scholarship that will continue to support 6 students a year in perpetuity. The Simms/Mann Family Foundation Scholarship recruits recipients pursuing degrees in healthcare, in order to support the next generation of healthcare workers and researchers in obtaining a high-quality education that they otherwise may not be able to afford. To date, the Foundation has funded over 50 scholarships.
